Chewing gum is actually made of something called 'chicle' which came from trees. Chicle is a latex sap. As a chicle tree can only produce 100 gum sticks, the scientist had to find out a substitute of this for mass production, hence they use synthetic rubber compound in chewing gum, this rubber compound combines with sugar and natural or artificial flavouring.
Hence, what makes chewing gum so chew-able is rubber.
